Videos
About Pregnancy, Birth, Newborns, and Parenting
You
may be able to Check these Out from Your Local Library
Videos
can provide an excellent supplement to classes in childbirth preparation,
newborn care, and breastfeeding. Being able to view them at home can allow you
to take notes, pause the videos to reflect on what you have seen, discuss with
your partner what you saw, and what you would like at your own birth, etc.
I
have not seen many of these… so I can’t make specific recommendations. I have *’ed the ones which I know to be good.
I
have not included many videos that are more than 5 years old. When choosing
videos, be aware of copyright dates. Obviously, the birth process, infant needs, and breastfeeding haven’t
changed fundamentally in centuries, so much of the
information is universal and continually relevant. However, some things do
change: medical treatments of complications, standard medical protocols,
specific recommendations on immunizations and sleep safety, etc. So, if you
watch older videos, make sure you’re also able to verify current information by
taking classes, using up-to-date books, or asking your doctor.
(For those of you in the Seattle area, I have
marked KCLS for books in the King County library system, or SPL for Seattle
Public Library to show which library system they’re in. If you’re anywhere else
in the U.S., this will at least give you a list of titles to look for in your
own local library. Call numbers should be similar elsewhere.)
